(Updated 06/24/2024)
The slate of 2024 action movies got off to a hard-hitting start, and there is so much more in theaters now, and on the way. Major standouts include THE FALL GUY, starring Ryan Gosling, and FURIOSA, the prequel to MAD MAX: FURY ROAD from series creator George Miller.
Let’s take a look at what’s in store for fans — here are the new action movies to watch in theatres.
New Action Movies Playing in Theatres Now
Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 1
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, “Horizon: An American Saga” explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America. [June 28]
Bad Boys Ride or Die
BAD BOYS FOR LIFE directors Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah return to make the fourth movie in the series, with Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexander Ludwig, and Paola Núñez all returning to their roles from the previous movie. When their late police captain gets linked to drug cartels, wisecracking Miami cops Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett embark on a dangerous mission to clear his name. George Miller’s next chapter in the Mad Max story is a prequel focused on the rise of Charlize Theron’s character Furiosa. In this outing, Furiosa is played by Anya Taylor-Joy of THE MENU and THE WITCH. Read more about FURIOSA here. [May 24]
The Fall Guy
He’s a stuntman, and like everyone in the stunt community, he gets blown up, shot, crashed, thrown through windows and dropped from the highest of heights, all for our entertainment. And now, fresh off an almost career-ending accident, this working-class hero has to track down a missing movie star, solve a conspiracy and try to win back the love of his life while still doing his day job. What could possibly go right? From real life stunt man and director David Leitch, the blockbuster director of BULLET TRAIN and ATOMIC BLONDE. Read more about THE FALL GUY here. [May 3]
New Action Movies Coming to Theatres Soon
And now, here are the new action movies that will be on the big screen in the weeks and months to come.
Twisters
Daisy Edgar-Jones and Glen Powell star as opposing forces who come together to try to predict, and possibly tame, the immense power of tornadoes. Kate Cooper (Edgar-Jones) is a former storm chaser haunted by a devastating encounter with a tornado during her college years who now studies storm patterns on screens safely in New York City. She is lured back to the open plains by her friend, Javi (Anthony Ramos) to test a groundbreaking new tracking system. There, she crosses paths with Tyler Owens (Powell), the charming and reckless social-media superstar who thrives on posting his storm-chasing adventures with his raucous crew. The more dangerous the better. As storm season intensifies, terrifying phenomena never seen before are unleashed, and Kate, Tyler, and their competing teams find themselves squarely in the paths of multiple storm systems converging over central Oklahoma in the fight of their lives. Read more about TWISTERS here. [July 19]
Horizon: An American Saga Chapter 2
In a bold and unusual move — and one we love — the sequel to Kevin Costner's new Western epic arrives in theaters just two months after the first movie. We still know relatively little about the first part of HORIZON, and we can tell you even less about the second. But what we do know suggests that is less a traditional sequel and more a second story with related characters. [August 16]
The Crow
Soulmates Eric Draven and Shelly Webster are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Draven returns to seek bloody revenge against the killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right. [August 23]
Kraven the Hunter
Villains aren’t born. They’re made. Kraven the Hunter is the visceral story about how and why one of Marvel’s most iconic villains came to be. Set before his notorious vendetta with Spider-Man, Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the titular character in the R-rated film. Read more about KRAVEN THE HUNTER here. [December 13]
The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim
More than two hundred years before the events of THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING, the King of Rohan, Helm Hammerhand, must defend his lands from vicious attacks by men called the Dunlendings. This anime explores an unseen chapter in Middle-Earth's history, and features the voices of Brian Cox and Miranda Otto. Read more about THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE WAR OF THE ROHIRRIM here.
