When biologist Delia Owens, who had already written three memoirs about her work studying animals in Africa, published her first fiction novel, there was no reason to expect that it would be the biggest book of the year. But "Where the Crawdads Sing," which follows the life of an abandoned young woman who is accused of murder, turned into a smash hit. The novel was the best-selling book of any kind in print in 2019, and rights to make a movie were quickly snapped up by Reese Witherspoon's company Hello Sunshine.
Now we've got the first trailer for the WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING movie, and it gives us a great look at the adaptation. It also features the first taste of a big part of the soundtrack: An original song by Taylor Swift. Here's everything we know about WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING.
When Does Where the Crawdads Sing Come Out?
The movie version of WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING can be seen exclusively in movie theatres beginning on July 15.

The first WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING trailer created a balance between setting up the life and environment of Kya Clarke and establishing the legal trouble that engulfs her when a young man turns up dead. This one echoes that approach while offering a few more specific looks at Kya's life.
Hear the New Taylor Swift Song From Where the Crawdads Sing
Any Taylor Swift fan (and probably a lot of other people) will recognize Swift's voice in the trailer for WHERE THE CRAWDADS SING. We only get to hear part of Swift's new song, "Carolina," which Swift composed specifically for the movie. But now you can hear the entire tune via the embed above.
As she said on Instagram, "Where The Crawdads Sing is a book I got absolutely lost in when I read it years ago. As soon as I heard there was a film in the works starring the incredible @daisyedgarjones and produced by the brilliant @reesewitherspoon, I knew I wanted to be a part of it from the musical side. I wrote the song 'Carolina' alone and asked my friend @aarondessner to produce it. I wanted to create something haunting and ethereal to match this mesmerizing story."
The Cast of Where the Crawdads Sing
Daisy Edgar-Jones, who rose to fame in the series "Normal People," and who has also played roles in "Cold Feet" and "War of the Worlds," plays Kya as a teen and young adult.
