In VENGEANCE, B.J. Novak, who also writes and directs, plays a journalist who gets the chance to develop a compelling true crime podcast. There's just one wrinkle, which is that the victim of the crime in question is a woman he slept with a couple of times… and now her brother wants the reporter to help track down her killer.
We talked to Novak and his co-star, Boyd Holbrook, just before the movie's premiere. Novak explained that his character "is chasing the story of a lifetime, but what he doesn't realize at first is that it's also a really personal journey for him to grow up and have his expectations turned on their head."
Holbrook told us that VENGEANCE is "a fresh take on true crime. It's got this really brilliant, creative way of pulling in the zeitgeist of how podcasts are such a staple in entertainment, and how we're taking in stories." And maybe more to the point, the movie is a "commentary on the state of our nation, and [shows] that we're not so different after all."
