When Denzel Washington and his TRAINING DAY director Antoine Fuqua teamed up to make a big-screen version of THE EQUALIZER, released in 2014, the match between filmmakers and material seemed just about perfect. And, in fact, it was great. A sequel followed four years later, and in the interim Washington and Fuqua also remade THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN.
Ever since the sequel, people have asked an obvious question: Will there be an EQUALIZER 3? The answer is yes! Denzel Washington's new movie THE EQUALIZER 3 comes out this fall. Here is everything we know about THE EQUALIZER 3, including the violent first trailer.
When Does The Equalizer 3 Come Out?
THE EQUALIZER 3 will open exclusively in movie theatres on September 1.
Watch the First Trailer for The Equalizer 3
Note: This trailer is classified as a red-band preview due to a little bit of cursing and a lot of intense violence.
This trailer for THE EQUALIZER 3 is so focused it is almost classic. We're reintroduced to Robert McCall as he would like to be — at peace — and as he really is: supremely violent. These movies are popular in part because, like the Jack Reacher novels, they sell the fantasy of a highly-trained operative who uses his skills in the service of unquestionably moral ends. That's on full display in this trailer, even if the movie's full story might be a little more complicated.
What Is The Equalizer 3 About?
Robert McCall is retired and living in Italy, where he just wants to have a nice place to enjoy his remaining years. But then he witnesses a few examples of mafia intimidation. Soon McCall is black-bagging his way through his adopted home, taking out mobsters with extreme prejudice.
The movie was written by Richard Wenk, who wrote the two previous EQUALIZER movies, and also penned Denzel and Fuqua's version of THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN.
The Cast of The Equalizer 3
We probably don't need to make the point that Denzel Washington is back for this threequel, but just in case: He's back! Also on board is Dakota Fanning, who co-starred with Washington in the thriller MAN ON FIRE. That movie was made almost 20 years ago, when Fanning was a child. Getting to see how she and Washington work together now, decades later, is one of the big draws of this movie. Fanning only appears at the end of the trailer and we don't have much info about her character.
The cast also features Gaia Scodellaro ("That Dirty Black Bag"), Eugenio Mastrandrea ("From Scratch"), Remo Girone (FORD V FERRARI), Sonia Ammar (SCREAM), Daniele Perrone (BAARIA), Andrea Scarduzio (MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE – DEAD RECKONING PART ONE) and Andrea Dodero ("Blocco 181"). Since we don't know any plot details, we can't predict what their parts might be as of yet.
The Fifth Fuqua/Washington Movie
Director Antoine Fuqua and star Denzel Washington have a partnership that spans decades. Their first team-up was the iconic TRAINING DAY, and they also did the MAGNIFICENT SEVEN remake and the first two EQUALIZER movies together. Clearly, the pair has a good thing going!
Along for the ride this time is celebrated cinematographer Robert Richardson. He's best known for many collaborations with Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino. Indeed, there's a bit of the look of DJANGO UNCHAINED to some of this footage.
