For his new historical sports drama movie, George Clooney and screenwriter Mark L. Smith adapt Daniel James Brown's non-fiction book into THE BOYS IN THE BOAT, which tells the story of the University of Washington rowing crew which represented the United States at the 1936 Summer Olympic games in Berlin.
Callum Turner stars as rower Joe Rantz, whose personal hardships as a child make his ascent to the top of the rowing world all the more dramatic. Joel Edgerton stars as University of Washington rowing coach Al Ulbrickson, who pushed Rantz and the rest of the school's rowing team to work beyond their limits in order to compete at an Olympic level.
We talked to Clooney, Edgerton, Turner, and more cast members to get a sense of the film's historical context, the physical difficulties of bringing the physical challenge of rowing to the big screen, and the real-life figures that inspired the movie.
