The Bob’s Burgers Movie: Everything You Need to Know
1/13/2022 • 4 min read
America’s favorite singing, burger-slinging cartoon family is finally getting the big-screen treatment this year. “Bob’s Burgers” is the Fox animated TV series that chronicles the exploits of the Belcher family: Parents Bob and Linda, and kids Louise, Gene, and Tina. Their escapades have always been outsized, but now they have a story that’s too big to be told on the small screen.
Created by Loren Bouchard, the musical sitcom has been running strong since 2012 and was recently renewed for its twelfth and thirteenth seasons. The series’ popularity sparked a comic book series, a soundtrack album, and a virtual pinball game. It was nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Animated Program seven times consecutively, winning in 2014 and 2017. Due to the series’ overwhelmingly positive critical reception and fan following, a movie was inevitable. And now THE BOB’S BURGERS MOVIE is here!
The Bob’s Burgers Movie Release Date
After two years of delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, THE BOB’S BURGERS MOVIE is currently sitting at a release date of May 27.
Check Out The Bob’s Burger’s Movie Trailer!
The trailer for THE BOB’S BURGERS MOVIE was just released on January 11 and is pretty restrained with respect to revealing plot details. It does, however, show audiences quick glimpses of all the show's major characters.
The official synopsis does provide a little more insight as to what we can expect from the story:
“The story begins when a ruptured water main creates an enormous sinkhole right in front of Bob's Burgers, blocking the entrance indefinitely and ruining the Belchers’ plans for a successful summer. While Bob and Linda struggle to keep the business afloat, the kids try to solve a mystery that could save their family's restaurant. As the dangers mount, these underdogs help each other find hope and fight to get back behind the counter, where they belong.”
If this plot summary and trailer are any indications, it looks like audiences have an exciting and entertaining adventure in store for them with the Belcher family.
Leaning into Bob’s Burgers’ Musical Roots
One of the most distinctive features of “Bob’s Burgers’ is its penchant for musicality. Over the years, episodes have featured many ear-worm songs, often with deliberately ridiculous titles and lyrics to match the fascinations of the Belcher kids. We're talking about tunes such as "Butts, Butts, Butts," "Bad Stuff Happens in the Bathroom," and "Electric Love."
So does the movie also lean into the musical nature of the series? Yes! THE BOB'S BURGERS MOVIE will, in fact, be a musical. And not only that, but a musical-comedy-adventure-mystery-adventure, according to the studio. It really does seem like the movie will "scratch every itch the fans of the show have ever had," according to Bouchard.
The Rocky Road to the Big Screen
Aside from dual release date pushbacks, THE BOB'S BURGERS MOVIE didn’t have the easiest journey. Announced in 2017 and originally planned for a 2020 release, the film not only endured roadblocks caused by the pandemic in 2020. The Disney acquisition of 20th Century Fox threw another wrench in the works. In fact, the film was briefly pulled from the studio’s release schedule entirely in the months following the completion of the merger. However, THE BOB'S BURGERS MOVIE appeared back on the schedule the very next day. Talk about a close call!
The Bob’s Burgers Movie Cast
The primary voice cast of “Bob’s Burgers” will all be filling their usual spots for the film. H. Jon Benjamin, Kristen Schaal, John Roberts, Dan Mintz, and Eugene Mirman all reprise their roles as the Belcher family members, while Kevin Kline, Larry Murphy, Zach Galifianakis, David Wain, and Sam Seder will be returning as a few of the show’s recurring characters.
The TV series has always featured cameos and musical performances from a wide array of comedy and musical performers, too. We don't have any definitive details yet but expect to perk up your ears when some familiar voices are heard in the movie.
