(04/20/2020)

If you've got a movie-loving mom, or are one yourself, Mother's Day 2020 is going to be a quiet celebration at home — but there are a lot of movies to look forward to in the months to come! We're not saying don't get mom flowers for Mother's Day — call the florist now, before you forget! — but that movies are an amazing gift in addition to the classic bouquet. This year, you just have to plan ahead more than usual.

The new movie lineup for the rest of 2020 and leading into 2021 features several movies with women front and center, both in front of and behind the camera. In the spirit of Mother's Day, here are five upcoming movies with strong female leads.

Wonder Woman 1984

This year’s DC movies belong to women like the fierce and formidable Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot’s hero returns in the highly-anticipated sequel, WONDER WOMAN 1984, which takes our favorite warrior out of the distant past and into the more recent past of – you guessed it – 1984. In an America gripped by the Cold War, Diana is confronted with new dangers and the return of an old love. "SNL" vet Kristen Wiig plays the villain Cheetah, with "Game of Thrones" star Pedro Pascal as millionaire Maxwell Lord, and Chris Pine returning as Steve Trevor. Wonder Woman herself dons an amazing suit of golden armor, which comes complete with wings, and we can't wait to see her take flight.

A Quiet Place Part II

Emily Blunt truly takes center stage in this world-expanding sequel. Original director/star John Krasinski returned to write and direct, while Emily Blunt is joined once again by Millicent Simmonds and Noah Jupe as the Abbott family. Picking up right after the events of the first movie, the Abbotts seek new shelter after leaving their old home behind. They run into characters played by Cillian Murphy and Djimon Hounsou, and they also run afoul of monsters once again. Expect to see developments to the story of a world dominated by aggressive creatures that respond to the slightest sound — and we bet that Emily Blunt will once again take the beasts to task.

Black Widow

We've hoped to see Scarlett Johansson star in a solo BLACK WIDOW movie for many years, so this flashback story fulfills fan dreams, at long last. Scarlett Johansson returns as Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, in a story that is set shortly after the events of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR. While on the run from events in the US, Black Widow ends up in Budapest where she meets Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh (MIDSOMMAR, LITTLE WOMEN). Yelena is basically Natasha’s successor as an assassin, but there are deep bonds between the two which make them more like sisters than enemies. Black Widow will also have to face off against the villainous Taskmaster, who can almost instantly learn any combat moves used by any opponent. Cate Shortland (BERLIN SYNDROME) is directing.

Promising Young Woman

Everyone said Cassie (Carey Mulligan) was a promising young woman... until a mysterious event abruptly derailed her future. But nothing in Cassie's life is what it appears to be: she's wickedly smart, tantalizingly cunning, and she's living a secret double life by night. Now, an unexpected encounter is about to give Cassie a chance to right the wrongs of the past in this thrilling and wildly entertaining story.

In this adaptation of the best-selling novel by Dan Mallory, writing as A. J. Finn, Amy Adams stars as Dr. Anna Fox, an agoraphobic child psychologist who while confined to her New York City brownstone, befriends her neighbor across the street. Anna's life goes haywire, however, when something terrible appears to befall that neighbor — but Anna's own issues make a simple decision like calling the police into a much bigger question. Joe Wright (ATONEMENT, HANNA) directs from a script by Tracy Letts.
