The last couple of years has been a great time for fans of shonen anime who want to see their favorite characters on the big screen. In 2020, the DEMON SLAYER movie took Japan by storm, and it arrived in the US in 2021. Now, following a massive theatrical debut in Japan, the movie which acts as a "Jujutsu Kaisen" series prequel will bow in the US as well.

This JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 trailer doesn't tell us too much about the movie, but it does introduce the general vibe of the movie and gives a hint of the hard-hitting action in store.

In the world of JUJUTSU KAISEN, humans emanated Cursed Energy, which is kind of like uncontrolled negative emotion. This energy gives rise to malevolent spirits called Curses. Meanwhile, Jujutsu Sorcerers can harness and control Cursed Energy — and they battle Curses with a wide range of techniques that use that fundamental ability.

In JUJUTSU KAISEN 0, Yuta Okkotsu and Rika Orimoto are childhood friends who promised to marry. Or they were — Rika was killed and now, six years later, Rika has become a Curse, but she is still bound to the teenage Yuta. In moments of danger, Rika manifests to protect her former friend. Yuta begins to train as a Jujutsu Sorcerer, even as his new mentor's former friend sets his sights on Rika.

Yes, JUJUTSU KAISEN 0 is a prequel even though it wasn't originally conceived that way. Creator Gege Akutami originally developed a manga called "Tokyo Metropolitan Curse Technical School," which was serialized in "Jump GIGA" magazine in 2017. When the "Jujutsu Kaisen" manga became immensely popular, the earlier series was renamed "Jujutsu Kaisen 0" to more formally set it up as a prequel.

The main character of JUJUTSU KAISEN 0, Yuta, does show up in the anime series. So, too, does the movie's main villain, Suguru Geto. But you don't need to see the series to understand the movie. In fact, if you haven't seen the anime series, the movie is a perfect entry point!

We've mentioned Gege Akutami already, but one notable thing about the artist is that "Gege Akutami" is a pseudonym. Their real name is unknown — in fact, aside from a few basic facts and manga-specific interests and experiences, relatively little is known about the manga creator, who has been known to publish misleading "self-portraits" and give interviews in full costume.

For JUJUTSU KAISEN 0, which is produced by the company MAPPA, Sunghoo Park served as director, working from a script by Hiroshi Seko. Tadashi Hiramatsu is the character designer, while Teppei Itou worked as director of photography. Junichi Higashi — the one newcomer to the team who had not worked on the "Jujutsu Kaisen" anime series — worked as art director, while the score is by Hiroaki Tsutsumi, Yoshimasa Terui, and Alisa Okehazama.
