A new GHOSTBUSTERS movie is coming this spring! Two years ago, GHOSTBUSTERS: AFTERLIFE created a new beginning for the series with a story that followed a new generation of Ghostbusters. That's not "new generation" in a figurative sense, but in a very literal one, since a couple of the major characters were the children of Harold Ramis's character Dr. Egon Spengler.
Now, GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE follows those characters as they move to New York City. There, they settle into the old Ghostbusters firehouse HQ just in time to see a supernatural storm turn the entire city to ice. Some familiar characters are set to show up along the way, too! What's the Release Date for Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire?
Sony Pictures will release GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE in movie theaters on March 22. That means the new movie comes out just a couple months before the 40th anniversary of the original movie's release. (GHOSTBUSTERS came out on June 8, 1984.)

While the last couple of Ghostbusters movies have been coy about whether or not any legacy characters were involved, there's no doubt this time. The entire surviving legacy crew is present in the new GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE trailer.
This trailer tees up a story that unites the old and new characters while also promising a lively mix of new comedy and horror beats alongside some nostalgia-inducing callbacks to films of the past.
What's the Plot of Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire?
The extended Spengler family introduced in GHOSTBUSTERS AFTERLIFE packs up to move from Oklahoma to New York City, in part to lend a hand to the original Ghostbusters. The legacy team now runs a paranormal research institute. But when they come into possession of a strange orb artifact, things start to go haywire. Soon there's a powerful skeletal spectre wandering around the city, and a wave of supernatural cold that threatens to shut down the entire city — permanently.
Ghostbusters 4: Who Is in the Cast?
Carrie Coon returns as Callie Spengler, and Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace return as Trevor and Phoebe Spengler. Paul Rudd is back as Gary Grooberson.
Additionally, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Ernie Hudson are back in action as their original Ghostbuster characters. William Atherton also returns as the snooty EPA inspector Walter Peck, and Annie Potts is back, too.
There are new characters, too, played by Patton Oswalt, Kumail Nanjiani, Celeste O'Connor, and Emily Alyn Lind. James Acaster appears, too, and his character seems to be heavily styled on the Egon Spengler character — but the version from "The Real Ghostbusters" animated series, rather than the live-action movie. So that's fun!
Who Directed Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire?
While Jason Reitman — son of original GHOSTBUSTERS director Ivan Reitman — made GHOSTBUSTERS AFTERLIFE, he has moved over to a writing and producing role for this movie. FROZEN EMPIRE is directed by Gil Kenan, whose movie MONSTER HOUSE featured its own crew of kids battling the supernatural.
GHOSTBUSTERS: FROZEN EMPIRE opens on March 22.
