Ghosts have returned to America — this time to the heartland rather than the city — but we're in luck because there are Ghostbusters ready to corral them. Well, young potential Ghostbusters, anyway. In GHOSTBUSTERS AFTERLIFE, the grandchildren of one of the original 'busters find themselves face to face with their grandfather's legacy.
To learn how a new generation tackled this story, we talked to McKenna Grace and Finn Wolfhard, who play the new generation of Ghostbusters. We also spoke to Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, and writer/director Jason Reitman, whose father directed the original movie.
Grace was a huge fan going in. "That's always been one of my favorite films… when I was little I used to carry around this little plastic Slimer toy — not a stuffed animal or anything, hard plastic. Obsessed!"
Jason Reitman explained that "What we wanted to do was relay exactly what it was like to watch that 1984 film. [GHOSTBUSTERS] was about the Ghostbusters, but GHOSTBUSTERS AFTERLIFE is about the rest of us. It's about our experience reliving and digging into the past like archaeologists and understanding our relationship to that film. And what it would be like for this family to inherit this house, which is to inherit this legacy, which is ghost busting."
For Paul Rudd, Reitman's approach to making this movie worked spectacularly well. "This really reminds me of a movie that we grew up with and we don't see as much anymore. It was really moving," he said.
