Director Christopher Landon made a great set of three movies that injected new energy into the horror/comedy space: HAPPY DEATH DAY and its sequel, and the 2020 follow-up, FREAKY. Now he's back with DROP, which combines the awkwardness of a first date with the threat of home invasion.
Here's the first trailer for DROP, and a rundown of the movie's influences and creators.
What's the Drop Release Date?
Universal Pictures will release DROP in movie theaters on April 11, 2025.
Watch the First Drop Trailer
What was in the water last year that led to a wonderful crop of relationship-themed horror movies coming out now? There are quite a few! And this first trailer for DROP has all the elements we need: a simple setup, some good characters, and an increasingly tense situation. And having seen Landon's other movies, whatever resolution you think might be obvious based on this trailer, probably is not what will end up happening.
What's the Plot of Drop?
The plot of DROP, which is also relayed in the trailer and further detailed in the behind the scenes video above, also informs the title. Violet, a widow who has been reluctant to date, finally goes out with a guy she has been talking to for a while. Her younger sister is home babysitting her son. But during the date, Violet starts to receive Airdropped threats — hence the title — which drastically change the course of the evening.
It's interesting to see director Christopher Landon referencing his early script, DISTURBIA. The idea that DROP is an evolution of that movie's Hitchcock-influenced storytelling is appealing. (Side note: DISTURBIA, directed by DJ Caruso, is great! It's part of the reason that Shia LaBeouf became a star in the mid-Aughts.)
You Don't Have to Leave Airdrop Open to Everyone
This is more of a public service announcement than anything else. Close down access to services like Airdrop! The script for DROP probably specifies a reason that Violet keeps hers open, and it's a plausible enough plot device that we're happy to roll with it. But in real life? Absolutely not.
Who's in the Cast of Drop?
DROP is anchored by Meghann Fahy of "The White Lotus" and "The Perfect Couple." She plays the widowed Violet, whose date night quickly becomes a nightmare. Brandon Sklenar, of IT ENDS WITH US and Taylor Sheridan's "Yellowstone" spin-off "1923," plays Violet's date, Henry, who is either in way over his head on this particular evening, or more deeply connected to Violet's predicament than it seems. Or, the truth of what's going on could well be some other secret third thing.
The cast also features Violett Beane as Violet's younger sister; Jacob Robinson as Violet's son; and Reed Diamond, Gabrielle Ryan Spring, Jeffery Self, Ed Weeks, and Travis Nelson.
DROP opens on April 11.
