Luca Guadagnino is a director best known for his literate and sensual dramas like I AM LOVE, and for his ability to create utterly compelling images. His most recent feature film was 2018‘s SUSPIRIA, a deliciously gruesome horror movie. Now, Guadagnino is combining several of his interests with an adaptation of the novel BONES AND ALL.
The movie stars Timothée Chalamet and Taylor Russell and is based on the book by Camille DeAngelis. The tale is a somewhat queasy story about a young woman who “doesn’t just break hearts, she devours them." Literally. Here's everything we know so far about BONES AND ALL, including the trailer.
When Can You See Bones and All?
This novel adaptation is set to be released in movie theatres on November 23, placing it squarely in the award season calendar. It's also somewhat fun that a horror-tinged movie about eating is set to debut right at Thanksgiving. (BONES AND ALL opens in New York and Los Angeles on November 18, giving those cities an early look at the movie.)
BONES AND ALL already premiered at the Venice International Film Festival at the beginning of September. It won rave reviews, which only served to generate even more interest in the already-hot title.
Watch the Bones and All Trailer
A brief trailer arrived for BONES AND ALL not long before the movie's Venice premiere. But now there's a proper full trailer, which you can see above.
The song in this trailer is "You Want It Darker," by Leonard Cohen. It's a good choice given that this is a moody edit full of shadows and blood. This footage suggests strong performances from Taylor Russell and Timothée Chalamet, too.
What Is Bones and All About?
To avoid spoilers, we're going to lean on a description of the original novel for a moment.
BONES AND ALL follows Maren Yearly, whose "shameful needs have forced her into exile" after she is abandoned by her mother after the girl's sixteenth birthday. What are those needs, exactly? Well. "Ever since her mother found Penny Wilson's eardrum in her mouth when Maren was just two years old, she knew life would never be normal for either of them. Love may come in many shapes and sizes, but for Maren, it always ends the same-with her hiding the evidence and her mother packing up the car."
Yike.
A Meaty Role for Taylor Russell
To play Maren, Luca Guadagnino turned to Taylor Russell, who was so wonderful in WAVES and was quite a bit of fun to watch in ESCAPE ROOM. Given that the director did not shy from the gruesome in SUSPIRIA, we wonder exactly how he filmed this particular story. No matter his choices, however, we expect that Taylor Russell will be captivating. That's what she does.
Timothée Chalamet and the Supporting Cast
Timothée Chalamet plays Lee, who is all too much like Maren. Which is to say, he also has an, uh, eating problem. We've seen Chalamet act with intensity in films like DUNE, but this might push him to an entirely new level.
The first BONES AND ALL trailer certainly suggests a ferocity we've never seen from the actor before. If anyone wondered how the actor, who once might have been described as physically rather slight, could be scary enough to make this story work — well, the trailer should put any concerns to rest.
He'll have excellent support from the rest of the cast, too. BONES AND ALL also features Mark Rylance, Michael Stuhlbarg, André Holland, Chloë Sevigny, David Gordon Green, and Francesca Scorsese. (Yes, that's the daughter of director Martin Scorsese.) In a nod to the history of horror, Jessica Harper also appears — she starred in the original SUSPIRIA and appeared in Guadagnino's remake as well. Maren Yearly's family may not be willing to stick with her, but it's clear that Guadagnino likes to keep close ties with his best people.
A New Score From Reznor and Ross
If you needed one more reason to be interested in BONES AND ALL, the movie will feature the latest score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. They are, yes, the two primary members of Nine Inch Nails, and they've won Oscars for their scores for THE SOCIAL NETWORK and SOUL. Since Nine Inch Nails has been back on the road in 2022 this is the only new Reznor/Ross movie score we know will arrive this year. So we're ready to hear it!
BONES AND ALL opens wide on November 23.
