When Kevin Feige revealed Marvel's upcoming movie slate at Comic-Con in July 2022, he had a few huge revelations. Perhaps the biggest is that the current story cycle, now known as the Multiverse Saga, will conclude with a pair of Avengers movies. The first of the two is called AVENGERS: THE KANG DYNASTY.
Or at least, that has been the title, but things are changing. Right now the only thing we know for certain about AVENGERS 5 is the writer. We'll get into the details below.
The Next Avengers Movie Opens in 2026
Marvel Studios will release AVENGERS 5 on May 1, 2026. There is likely to be another Marvel movie earlier that year, but we don't have a title for it yet. (Though if we had to place a bet, it would be on the SHANG-CHI sequel, which is rumored to be subtitled WRECKAGE OF TIME.)
Gotta Ask - Is There an Avengers 5 Trailer?
We understand why you have to ask but no, there is definitely no official trailer or images from the next Avengers movie. It hasn't even filmed yet! Production will hopefully get underway a few months into 2024.
So… Is Avengers 5 Still Called The Kang Dynasty?
In December 2023, actor Jonathan Majors was convicted of reckless assault and harassment, after which Marvel Studios dropped his contract. Majors played Kang in the "Loki" TV series and in ANT-MAN AND THE WASP: QUANTUMANIA. He was meant to be Marvel's next Big Bad. Now the big question is: Will Marvel re-cast Kang, or change course entirely?
The Hollywood Reporter says that, internally, Marvel is calling the movie AVENGERS 5, and that it will get a new subtitle. We don't have a timeline for any reveals of new information, but would expect to hear something in the next few months. While the company only took action to fire Majors following his conviction, chances are that the company has been working on contingency plans for a while.
A Loki Writer Is Penning the Avengers 5 Script
In November 2023, Marvel hired "Loki" writer Michael Waldron to rework the script for what was then called THE KANG DYNASTY. Whether or not he began the process of moving away from a Kang-focused story, we don't know. (We'd put money on "yes.")
At this point, Waldron is the only confirmed attached talent for the movie.
Who Is Directing Avengers 5?
When the movie was THE KANG DYNASTY, Destin Daniel Cretton was going to direct the movie. Cretton, of course, directed SHANG-CHI, and he was almost immediately set to direct the sequel to that movie. That sequel, as we mentioned just above, is rumored to be called WRECKAGE OF TIME.
But Cretton has dropped out of the Avengers movie. No director is currently set. We expect to hear more soon, since Marvel will have to get the movie into production in the first half of 2024 if they plan to stick with the May 2026 release date.
