Want to see two of the best-looking actors currently working as they fake a relationship that might turn into a real fling? While some romantic comedies watch as somewhat normal people clash in everyday situations, ANYONE BUT YOU explores a slightly different scenario: How much comedy can result when two super-hot people are in a wildly awkward situation in one of the most beautiful places on Earth?
Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell star in the movie as two people who once had an unsuccessful hookup as they find themselves trying to navigate social situations at a wedding in Australia. Naturally, they lean into the weirdness of the situation by pretending to be a couple, a tactic which we assume is going to cause more problems than it solves. Check out the new full trailer for ANYONE BUT YOU and learn more about the movie.
When Does Anyone But You Come Out?
Columbia and Sony Pictures will release ANYONE BUT YOU in movie theatres on December 22.
Watch the New Anyone But You Trailer
The first teaser trailer for ANYONE BUT YOU mostly cruised on the raw sex appeal of the movie's two leads, but this one adds a lot more backstory. We learn why the two characters have traveled to Australia at the same time, why they might not really like one another, and, finally, why they decide to pretend to have a relationship. And the sex appeal — well, that's still very much on display here!
Hey… Is Anyone But You a William Shakespeare Movie?
Yes, it is. ANYONE BUT YOU is loosely based on Shakespeare's play "Much Ado About Nothing." There are already a few direct film adaptations of the play, perhaps the most notable being Kenneth Branagh's 1993 version.
ANYONE BUT YOU may not be overly concerned with putting every aspect of Shakespeare's story on the screen. The structure is a good starting point, though! That approach puts this new movie into a category with other low-key Shakespeare adaptations like 10 THINGS I HATE ABOUT YOU ("The Taming of the Shrew") and SHE'S THE MAN("Twelfth Night").
Who's in the Cast of Anyone But You?
The leads, obviously, are Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell, playing Bea and Ben. Sweeney has become enormously popular thanks to her work on the shows "Euphoria" and "The White Lotus," and she's also in the upcoming movies REALITY and MADAME WEB. Glen Powell has been steadily earning bigger and bigger roles; last year's TOP GUN MAVERICK was a breakthrough for him, and he'll be in TWISTERS, the sequel to the smash '90s tornado movie, next year.
Sweeney and Powell are joined by Alexandra Shipp, Michelle Hurd, Bryan Brown, Darren Barnet, Hadley Robinson, Dermot Mulroney, Rachel Griffiths and GaTa, most of whom are seen in the trailer as the bullet points of the story are laid out.
The Director Behind a Great Underrated Comedy Made Anyone But You
ANYONE BUT YOU comes from filmmaker Will Gluck, whose resume includes the early Emma Stone comedy EASY A. That movie is a high school comedy that is heavily inspired by "The Scarlet Letter," and it was a significant point in Stone's path to stardom.
In fact, ANYONE BUT YOU has some classic literary inspiration, too, as the story is very loosely based on Shakespeare's play "Much Ado About Nothing." (The lead character names are drawn directly from Beatrice and Benedick, the main characters in the play.) And the array of characters who may or may not fall into romantic entanglements, as seen in the trailer, suggests the play's influence on the script, too.
ANYONE BUT YOU opens on December 22.
