When we've looked back at the career of Tom Hanks, we've said that he's at his best when he's grumpy. Indeed, in A MAN CALLED OTTO, Hanks plays what seems like the ultra-version of a grumpy old man. Otto is a recently retired widower who is having trouble finding a reason to keep living.

Otto throws his sadness and frustration back at the outside world, looking to everyone around him like he's the grumpiest grump who ever grumped. That's not so, Hanks insisted when we spoke to him. "He's not grumpy, he's right! Big difference! Being grumpy is like, nothing works. Nothing is satisfying, everything is wrong. No — Otto is right!."

And, in the end, Otto is indeed more than he appears to be at first. "Everybody knows an Otto," says Hanks, "and I'd dare to say that you yourself have been an Otto on occasion."

Hanks elaborates more about his "grumpy-versus-being-right" worldview in our interview. We also talked to co-stars Mariana Treviño, and Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, who play the couple that moves in next door to Otto, and to director Marc Forster.
