What Are the Superhero Movies Coming to Theatres in 2020 and 2021?

(Updated 09/11/2020)

The last few years have been major for superheroes on the big screen. Marvel introduced new heroes like Captain Marvel and Black Panther, and released the epic conclusion to this chapter of the Avengers saga with AVENGERS: ENDGAME. We followed Spider-Man on adventures that took him FAR FROM HOME and INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE. The DC Comics universe had some big standouts as well, with Wonder Woman and Shazam headlining their own solo adventures, Batman teaming up with an all-star super-team in JUSTICE LEAGUE, and Margot Robbie making her debut as Harley Quinn.

It’s a great time to be a superhero fan, and things are about to get even more exciting. If you thought 2019 was intense, just wait until you see what 2020 and 2021 have in store for superhero movies.

After making her scene-stealing debut in SUICIDE SQUAD, Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn is headlining her own movie. In BIRDS OF PREY, Harley Quinn ditches the Joker and teams up with a crew of female antiheroes from the DC universe to take on some very bad guys. Directed by newcomer Cathy Yan and written by Christina Hodson (BUMBLEBEE), this wild spinoff follows Harley as she helps a young woman named Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) who’s run afoul of a dangerous villain named Black Mask (Ewan McGregor). Harley builds a squad of her own featuring Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), and Detective Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez).

Wonder Woman 1984

As you can see, the first half of 2020 belongs entirely to female superheroes – and that includes the WONDER WOMAN sort-of sequel we’ve been waiting for. Gal Gadot returns in WONDER WOMAN 1984, which follows the superhero into the 1980s as she becomes involved in the Cold War. She’ll face a new foe named Cheetah, played by former “SNL” star Kristen Wiig, and reunite with Steve Trevor (Chris Pine). Pedro Pascal (“The Mandalorian”) also stars as notable DC Comics character Maxwell Lord.

Black Widow

The first big superhero movie of the summer is BLACK WIDOW, the long-awaited and highly-anticipated solo film featuring Scarlett Johansson’s beloved Marvel hero. Johansson reprises her role as Natasha Romanoff, a skilled former assassin who becomes an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and joins the Avengers. The film takes place after the events of CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, and follows Natasha as she finds herself alone and forced to reckon with her past. BLACK WIDOW also stars David Harbour (“Stranger Things”) as Red Guardian, the Russian equivalent to Captain America. Florence Pugh (MIDSOMMAR) and Rachel Weisz (THE FAVOURITE) play spies, or “Black Widows,” who trained alongside Natasha in the Red Room program.

The Eternals

Marvel fans will have to wait until November for the next installment in Phase Four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but THE ETERNALS sounds like it’ll be worth a six-month wait. With an all-star cast that includes Angelina Jolie, Richard Madden (“Game of Thrones”), Kumail Nanjiani, Brian Tyree Henry, Salma Hayek, Kit Harington, and Gemma Chan, THE ETERNALS introduces new characters in a cosmic story about an immortal alien race created to protect humanity from their evil counterparts, known as the Deviants.

2020 Superhero Movies: Morbius

In July, we’ll meet another fascinating anti-hero from the Spider-Man universe in MORBIUS. Jared Leto (SUICIDE SQUAD) stars as Michael Morbius, a brilliant scientist who is coping with a rare illness. In an attempt to find a cure, Morbius accidentally infects himself with a disease that turns him into a type of vampire. Adria Arjona (“Good Omens”) plays Morbius’ love interest, with Matt Smith (“Doctor Who”) as his lifelong friend Loxias Crown, and Tyrese Gibson (THE FAST AND FURIOUS franchise) as an FBI agent hunting Morbius. Jared Harris (“Chernobyl”) plays Morbius’ mentor.

Venom 2: Let There Be Carnage

Just a few months later, Spider-Man’s other big anti-hero returns in VENOM 2: LET THERE BE CARNAGE. Tom Hardy is back as Eddie Brock, an investigative journalist whose body merges with a powerful alien symbiote known as “Venom.” Little is known about the sequel, which is being directed by Andy Serkis, the actor and motion-capture performer known for his roles in the recent PLANET OF THE APES movies and BLACK PANTHER. Also returning is Michelle Williams as Eddie’s fiancee Anne Weying, and Woody Harrelson as Cletus Kasady – a dangerous criminal who becomes Venom’s arch-nemesis, Carnage.
