Amazon History
The future really is now: The company once synonymous with internet book sales now enjoys Academy Award nominations on the regular. Huh? Yep—through its production subsidiary, Amazon Studios, Amazon—whose owner technically space-traveled—has indeed become a major player in the cinematic arts.
Founded in 2010, Amazon Studios was born to compete with the other major streaming platforms of its day. And in tossing its hat in the ring, Amazon has been able to achieve artistic acclaim in both TV and film production (hey—doesn’t hurt to have a serious budget). The success is by no means a stroke of creative genius—rather, a scientific one. Leveraging its notoriously advanced data collection and analysis technologies, Amazon has been able to pinpoint markets for content we—human people—didn’t know we wanted, but totally do want! Thanks, robots.
More About Amazon
Now, Amazon not only produces original content to be distributed through its streaming platform Prime Video, but also to be released in theatres. The most recent example is 2023’s Air, the story of Nike’s relationship with NBA star Michael Jordan. It stars Ben Affleck.
Amazon’s gone big, will go bigger, and likely won’t go home—it’s just too much of a media behemoth. But, in this case, size does matter: With the production power it possesses, Amazon Studios literally has the ability to make something for everyone. And it probably will.
