She was born on October 28, 1967, in Smyrna, Georgia, and grew up in a family of actors and playwrights. Her parents, Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts, were both performers who ran a workshop for aspiring actors and actresses.

Roberts began her acting career in the late 1980s with supporting roles in cult classics such as "Mystic Pizza" and "Steel Magnolias." However, it was her breakout role in the 1990 romantic comedy "Pretty Woman" that made her a household name. The film, which also starred Richard Gere, was a huge success and earned Roberts her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress.

Following the success of "Pretty Woman," Roberts went on to star in several other hit films, including "Sleeping with the Enemy," "The Pelican Brief," and "My Best Friend's Wedding." She won her first Academy Award for Best Actress in 2001 for her portrayal of Erin Brockovich in the eponymous film. The film was based on the true story of a legal clerk who helped to win a massive settlement against a California power company accused of polluting a city's water supply.

Over the course of her career, Roberts has won numerous awards and accolades for her performances. In addition to her Oscar win, she has won three Golden Globe Awards, including one for her performance in "Erin Brockovich," and a Screen Actors Guild Award for her role in "August: Osage County." In 2013, she was also named the People's Choice Awards Favorite Movie Actress of All Time.

Roberts has also worked in television, producing and starring in the Amazon Prime series "Homecoming." She has been involved in various philanthropic efforts, including supporting organizations such as UNICEF and amfAR, and serving as a global ambassador for Lancôme.

Over the years, Roberts' personal life has also been in the spotlight. She has been married to cinematographer Daniel Moder since 2002, and the couple has three children together. Prior to her marriage to Moder, Roberts had high-profile relationships with actors such as Kiefer Sutherland and Benjamin Bratt.
