Break the Silence: The Movie Brings the BTS Experience to Everyone

9/17/2020 • 4 min read

South Korean boy band BTS is a lot more than a major music act. BTS is an international sensation. The seven-member group, comprised of members RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook, has sold more than 20 million records worldwide and is the most successful group in South Korean history. (They have the #1 best-selling South Korean album of all time, too).

The group recently released the insidiously-catchy English language single "Dynamite," and to complement their ever-increasing presence in the US, the latest BTS film, BREAK THE SILENCE: THE MOVIE, comes to theaters on September 24. Shot on the "Love Yourself: Speak Yourself" World Tour, which hit cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, São Paulo, London, Paris, Osaka, Shizuoka, Riyadh, and Seoul, this is an all-new and uniquely revealing look at the band. Whether you're already a super-fan or are new to K-pop and BTS fandom, this movie is for you.

Epic and Intimate

As the trailer makes very clear (even without English language dialogue), this is a huge movie on a massive scale. We've enjoyed the resurgence of the concert movie format over the last few years, thanks to movies like Taylor Swift’s MISS AMERICANA and Beyonce’s HOMECOMING and her visual albums.

BREAK THE SILENCE looks similarly impressive, made even more effective by the fact that you can watch it on the big screen. And yet, since it features conversations with each band member captured during their last massive tour, there's an intimacy to this film which complements the band's social media presence, and gives fans a new look at the performers. The stateside contingent of K-Pop fandom should see a serious spike once BREAK THE SILENCE is released. It’s going to be hard not to swoon for these talented gents.

It's Something of a Sequel

BREAK THE SILENCE is the fourth BTS movie since 2018, which is pretty impressive. (In addition to the movies, BTS has filmed dozens of episodes of a reality TV series about the band.) BREAK THE SILENCE is positioned as a sequel of sorts to 2018’s BURN THE STAGE. And, yes, the titles are plays on the band's acronym. BTS stands for Bangtan Sonyeondan, which literally means "Bulletproof Boy Scouts," and suggests the band's ability to withstand pressures put on young people. The band has regularly found new meanings for the three-letter moniker, however, and BREAK THE SILENCE is the latest.

The 2018 feature, BURN THE STAGE, was a behind-the-scenes look at The Wings Tour in 2017. That trek around the globe played to a half-million fans in 19 countries. The movie was a similarly out-of-the-box blockbuster. When it went into theaters in November 2018, it was so popular that it returned for an encore a month later. It became the highest-grossing event cinema release of the year, when it sold more than 2 million tickets. In fact, BURN THE STAGE was re-released to theaters with a new preview of BREAK THE SILENCE attached. Chances are that BREAK THE SILENCE will be just as big – or bigger.

The Movie Follows a Massive Tour

While the music of BTS is relatable and approachable, orchestrating a tour for the band is a massive, complex endeavor. The Love Yourself: Speak Yourself World Tour supported three releases: an EP ("Love Yourself: Her"), an album ("Love Yourself: Tear"), and a compilation album ("Love Yourself: Answer").

The proper tour began in August 2018, in South Korea, with a "stadium extension" to the tour that began in May 2019 in Pasadena, California. That leg ran for an additional 62 concerts in 14 countries. The 14-month tour wound up being the band’s most successful yet, and Billboard reports that it was the most profitable tour performed by a non-English-language band, grossing nearly $200 million in the last 42 dates. In each city, shows often sold out in mere minutes, which means not every fan was able to attend. Everyone, however, will get a front-row seat when BREAK THE SILENCE is released.

It Coincides with Their North American Takeover

Some BREAK THE SILENCE screenings have been preceded by the "Dynamite" music video, which lives up to its name. The song had nearly 8 million streams on Spotify on its first day, making it the biggest global release of 2020. (It beat Taylor Swift’s "Cardigan.") In August, BTS performed the song on the socially-distanced MTV Music Video Awards; earlier this month, the band appeared on "The Today Show" and "America’s Got Talent." With the release of BREAK THE SILENCE, the American invasion of BTS will be, if not be totally complete, at least well on its way. Are you ready to join the BTS army?
