The Forever Purge: Everything You Need to Know
6/7/2021 • 4 min read
This summer, the fifth and possibly final film in THE PURGE series will be unleashed. THE FOREVER PURGE continues the series built around an irresistible concept: For one night every year, all crime, including murder, is legal.
That simple but gripping conceit powers one of the most robust and imaginative horror franchises of the modern era. THE PURGE has been a huge hit for Blumhouse and Universal, and we have seen how that violent night affects individuals and society as a whole, and even how it came to be. Now, THE FOREVER PURGE — aka THE PURGE 5 — gives creator James DeMonaco a chance to bring his disturbing tale to a close. Now, in THE PURGE 5, we finally see what happens when a group of people decides the Purge should never end.
The Forever Purge Release Date
THE FOREVER PURGE will be in theatres on July 2, 2021.
Is There a Purge 5 Trailer?
There is! You can see the first FOREVER PURGE trailer just above. One of the things we've always wondered about these movies is whether or not anyone has ever tried to keep the Purge going after the official 24 hour period ends. THE PURGE 5 trailer looks set to answer that question, as a rogue group in Texas decides there's no reason for the nightmarish night to ever end.
The World of The Purge Has Grown Large
The first PURGE was a modest home invasion thriller starring Ethan Hawke as a man who builds the security systems that people use during the Purge, only to have his family come under attack. Scary, tense, and admirably low budget, it hinted at a larger world that has been explored in the subsequent films.
THE PURGE: ANARCHY and THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR both delved deeper into the Purge mythology and introduced a character that is the closest thing the franchise has come to a hero: Leo Barnes (Frank Grillo). THE PURGE: ANARCHY looked at the Purge in an urban setting and introduced a group of freedom fighters who violently opposed the Purge and the wealthy New Founding Fathers of America who back it. THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR showed what happens when an anti-Purge Presidential candidate comes under fire as the New Founding Fathers lifted the ban preventing elected officials from being targeted during the Purge.
The fourth film, THE FIRST PURGE, went back in time to look at the inaugural Purge night and the systemic causes of the Purge. The fourth movie was the most successful yet. And in 2018, a PURGE television spin-off was introduced that focused on a collection of people as they go through the annual event. (A second season aired in 2019 that covered the after-effects of the Purge.) Clearly, fans are ready for more Purging.
The Purge 5 Is a Direct Sequel to Election Year
The PURGE timeline has bounced back and forth between past and "present" but THE PURGE 5 is set squarely in the "now" of the series timeline. In other words, it's a direct sequel to THE PURGE: ELECTION YEAR. The biggest change this time is that that action appears to be more rural, as it takes place at least partially on a Texas ranch and near the border with Mexico.
Originator James DeMonaco, who has written every entry in the franchise and wrote and directed the first three entries, also penned this new installment. Everardo Gout, who wrote and directed the thriller DAYS OF GRACE, directed this fifth film. At one point an idea was floated that the fifth film could be a heist movie set in the world of the Purge, but that idea has been somewhat appropriated by the television series.
The Forever Purge Cast
Ana de la Reguera and Tenoch Huerta play two of the important roles in THE FOREVER PURGE, and the sequel's cast is co-headlined by Josh Lucas, who seems to play a rancher targeted by the "Forever Purge" militants. Cassidy Freeman, Leven Rambin, Alejandro Edda, and Will Patton also co-star.
The Forever Purge - Or The Final Purge?
While this movie franchise could seemingly go on forever, with a number of fascinating staple elements of this alternate future ripe for exploration, DeMonaco has stated this will probably be the final PURGE story.
“I think it’s a great way to end it all. We want to end it all, I think, in this one, and I’m very excited,” DeMonaco told Entertainment Weekly. “When I came up with the idea and pitched it to everybody, they seemed psyched, and I think it will be a really cool ending, how we take this one home.” In other words: this could be the end of the road for THE PURGE. Enjoy it while you can, one last time.
