The Croods: A New Age - Everything You Need to Know

(Updated 11/16/2020)

Seven years ago, DreamWorks Animation took us back to the dawn of human history, and now it is almost time to see what happens next. In 2013, THE CROODS introduced a prehistoric family that just wanted to survive to see the next sunrise. THE CROODS is a unique animated movie because its characters don't battle enemies or monsters — instead, they face their own fears and a landscape that is literally changing before their eyes.

This winter, THE CROODS: A NEW AGE will take the family into a whole new type of experience. Here's everything you need to know about THE CROODS 2.

The Croods Sequel Release Date

The Croods 2 Release Date

THE CROODS: A NEW AGE will come to theatres on November 25. It's been a long process to make the sequel happen, because DreamWorks Animation, which made the original movie, was acquired by Universal Pictures in 2016. Prior to that acquisition, plans for a CROODS sequel were developed and then briefly shelved.

In late 2017, DreamWorks Animation and Universal announced that THE CROODS sequel was in fact happening. The big change from prior plans was that while original co-directors Kirk DeMicco and Chris Sanders were originally going to direct the sequel, the schedule change reduced their availability. Sanders made THE CALL OF THE WILD for Fox, while DeMicco is busy on the animated musical VIVO, for Sony Animation. Joel Crawford, who worked as a story artist on the excellent and underrated RISE OF THE GUARDIANS and as head of story on TROLLS, is directing THE CROODS 2.

Watch the Trailer for The Croods: A New Age

The first trailer for THE CROODS: A NEW AGE arrived in September 2020. You can watch it just above! This footage reintroduces the Croods and also sets up their conflict with a family called The Bettermans — a "more evolved" clan that has built a beautiful refuge from the dangers of the outside world in a secluded spot that looks like paradise to the Croods.

When Does The Croods: A New Age Take Place?

As the video above demonstrates, THE CROODS: A NEW AGE is set in a time the filmmakers jokingly call "The Croodaceous." It's a time when animals that are now familiar to us had not yet, er, "decided what they want to be." This video showing the world's wildlife at the time of THE CROODS is the best look at the sequel yet.

The Croods Sequel Cast

The Croods Sequel Cast

THE CROODS had a stellar voice cast, and fortunately the key players are set to return. Nicolas Cage will reprise the role of Grug, the Crood patriarch, while Emma Stone returns to voice Eep, Grug's curious and adventurous daughter. Ryan Reynolds will once again play Guy, the more advanced young man who helps lead the Croods to new horizons. Catherine Keener is back as Ugga Crood, as is Clark Duke, playing Thunk Crood.

There will also be new characters voiced by Leslie Mann (BLOCKERS), Peter Dinklage ("Game of Thrones") and Kelly Marie Tran (STAR WARS: THE LAST JEDI).

The Croods 2 Story

The Croods 2 Story

We don't know too much about the story in the CROODS sequel, but we have a broad outline. After the family escaped their cave and learned not to fear anything new in the original movie, the Croods will be tested as they encounter a new family, the Bettermans. Mann and Dinklage voice the strict and overprotective Betterman parents, while Kelly Marie Tran voices Dawn, their awkward and sheltered daughter. Dawn has never seen the other side of a wall that shelters her family — putting her in a position similar to where Eep Crood was in the first movie.

Expect THE CROODS: A NEW AGE to develop the friendship between Dawn and Eep, as the more experienced Crood daughter helps her new friend embrace the challenges of life outside her home.

We'll have a lot more to tell you about THE CROODS 2 soon!
