A massively-popular children's book series gets the big-screen treatment in THE BAD GUYS. A crew of five criminal animals — Mr. Wolf, Mr. Snake, Mr. Shark, Mr. Piranha and Ms. Tarantula — are caught and put in the worst possible situation: They have to become good. Can they make the change?
With a fabulous voice cast that includes Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Awkwafina, Craig Robinson, Anthony Ramos, Richard Ayoade, Zazie Beetz, Alex Borstein, and Lilly Singh, THE BAD GUYS has something for audiences of all ages. We talked to Zazie Beetz, Lilly Singh, Craig Robinson and Marc Maron about lending their voices to the movie and developing these colorful criminal characters.
Thanks to the difference in energy between being in a room with actors versus being alone in the recording booth, "doing on-camera work is different," says Zazie Beetz. "But story and truth are still what you're trying to follow and achieve. But you have to shift your energy [to work in the voice booth]. I think doing voiceover work has allowed me to break that shell a little bit and to really just play and be open and be big and loud in a way that I've kind of missed. I've had to learn to control my eyebrows and now I can just be big. That's fun."
"I like the idea that you can evolve a character over time," says Marc Maron. "With animation, once they start seeing what you can do with the character they can adjust things in the script or shoot things a different way or do them again, to make things deeper or bigger. So there's a lot of room to grow the [character] on all levels."
