When James Gunn and Peter Safran announced their new vision for the DC Universe on movie screens, Supergirl was a key character. The new DCU will launch with SUPERMAN in 2025 (read more about that movie here) and SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW will follow almost exactly a year later.
There hasn't been a movie dedicated to Supergirl since the 1984 film starring Helen Slater, so this is an exciting development. While we expect the new SUPERMAN movie to be a relatively bright and hopeful take on the character, SUPERGIRL will likely be a bit more dark, reflecting the character's more difficult origin as an orphan of the planet Krypton.
Here's everything we know about SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW so far.
What's the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow Release Date?
Warner Bros. Pictures will release SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW in movie theaters on June 26, 2026.
Is There a Trailer for Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow?
There is no trailer for SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW right now. The movie is not even scheduled to film until January of 2025, so it will be a while before we see any footage. Maybe at San Diego Comic Con in 2025, since that will take place just after SUPERMAN is released in theaters, and Supergirl is expected to debut in that movie.
Is This the Same Supergirl From The Flash Movie?
No, it is not the same version of the character. Yes, technically they are both Supergirl, but the version played by Sasha Calle in the 2022 movie THE FLASH is not going to have any direct connection to the main character of SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW.
The New Supergirl Movie Will Be a Dark Sci-Fi Epic
When he announced plans for the new slate of DC Comics movies, creative chief James Gunn said that WOMAN OF TOMORROW would be "a big science fiction epic film." He also explained that Kara Zor-El is not quite as optimistic a character as her more famous cousin, Superman.
"Supergirl in this story is a character who was raised on a chunk of Krypton," James Gunn said. That has led to her to be somewhat more bitter than Superman. She has been hardened by the death of friends and family members as they experienced the end of Krypton's life as a planet.
After the announcement of writer Ana Nogueira, Gunn said on Instagram that "Ana is an amazing writer whose screenplay adaptation of Woman of Tomorrow is above and beyond anything I hoped it would be. We’re excited to be moving forward on this unique take on Supergirl in this beautiful, star-spanning tale."
Supergirl Will Be Played by Milly Alcock
Milly Alcock, who played the young version of Rhaenyra Targaryen in the first season of "The House of the Dragon," will star as Supergirl. At this point, Alcock is the only casting choice that has been revealed for the movie.
The New Supergirl Movie Is Based on a Recent Comic Book Series
The comic book series "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow," published between 2021 and 2022, created by writer Tom King and artist Bilquis Evely, is the basis for the new SUPERGIRL movie. Here's the description of the first issue, which should set up the story arc nicely:
Kara Zor-El has seen some epic adventures over the years, but finds her life without meaning or purpose. Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for? Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of Superman's fame. Just when Supergirl thinks she's had enough, everything changes. An alien girl seeks her out for a vicious mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there. She wants revenge, and if Supergirl doesn't help her, she'll do it herself, whatever the cost. Now a Kryptonian, a dog, and an angry, heartbroken child head out into space on a journey that will shake them to their very core.
Imagine the classic Western movie, TRUE GRIT, with Supergirl as the Rooster Cogburn character. (The one played by John Wayne in the original movie version, and Jeff Bridges in the Coen Brothers remake.) But in some ways, Supergirl is also a bit like Mattie Ross, the young girl who hires Rooster to avenge her father's death. It's a powerful story that demands we look at Supergirl in a new light.
The Director of I, Tonya Is Making Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow
While James Gunn is directing SUPERMAN and overseeing the development of all the new DC movies, he is not directing most of them. He hired Craig Gillespie, whose movies include I, TONYA, CRUELLA, and the underrated remake of FRIGHT NIGHT, to direct.
SUPERGIRL: WOMAN OF TOMORROW opens in 2026.
