10/28/2020 • 4 min read

(Updated 04/29/2024)

The superhero movie is one of the biggest things happening at the multiplex, and the flow of new movies isn't slowing down any time soon. In fact, after a couple of years of uncertainty, we know more about the superhero movies of the next few years than we have in quite a while. As Warner Bros. continues to develop the DC Comics movie slate, Marvel has announced a line-up of movies that extends for the next three years.

Want to know what's coming? Read on to find out about all the new superhero movies in 2024 and up through 2027! (Listed in the current release order.)

Deadpool & WolverineDeadpool & Wolverine | Cinemark

Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman return to play their most famous characters in a story that will bring chaos to the MCU. We know, thanks to a post from Reynolds, that the film takes place before LOGAN, which was set in 2029. Since the trailer shows the Time Variance Authority pulling Deadpool into the office for a little chat before sending him out into the field, we can guess that we'll see a few different versions of Wolverine, and probably many other surprise Marvel appearances, too. Shawn Levy (FREE GUY) is directing. Read more about DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE here. [July 26, 2024]

The CrowThe Crow | Cinemark

Soulmates Eric Draven and Shelly Webster are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Draven returns to seek bloody revenge against the killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right. Read more about THE CROW here. [August 23]

Joker: Folie à DeuxJoker: Folie à Deux | Cinemark

Writer/director Todd Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix reunite for a second JOKER movie. Lada Gaga plays Harley Quinn, likely with a few character tweaks that fit this particular vision of the Joker. And the production has musical numbers, even if it won't quite be a musical. That sounds wild at first — until you realize that it might be the perfect way to visualize the next stage of Arthur Fleck's life. Read more about JOKER: FOLIE À DEUX here. [October 4, 2024]

Venom: The Last DanceVenom: The Last Dance | Cinemark

Tom Hardy is back for a third turn as human Eddie Brock and his slimy alien symbiote, Venom. We don't know too much about the story in this threequel, but chances are good that we'll learn more soon. Read more about VENOM: THE LAST DANCE here.

Kraven the HunterKraven the Hunter | Cinemark

Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as Sergei Kravinoff, a big-game hunter better known as Kraven. This classic Spider-Man villain gets to play the anti-hero here as he faces off against villains played by Christopher Abbott and Alessandro Nivola. Characters such as Calypso and Chameleon show up as well — and Russell Crowe has an as-yet undisclosed role in the movie, too. Read more about KRAVEN THE HUNTER here. [December 13, 2024]

Captain America: Brave New WorldCaptain America: Brave New World | Cinemark

Anthony Mackie's Sam Wilson officially became Captain America in "The Falcon and the Winter Soldier," and he will topline the new Captain America movie, as well. We don't have any further details at this point but Malcolm Spellman and Dalan Musson, who were key writers on the streaming series, are scripting the movie, too. Read more about CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD here. [February 14, 2025]

Thunderbolts*Thunderbolts* | Cinemark

THUNDERBOLTS* might be a bit like Marvel's version of SUICIDE SQUAD, as it is about villains taking on secret missions for the government. There's a big cast of characters coming back from previous MCU movies, many making the leap up from supporting status: Sebastian Stan as the Winter Soldier, Hannah John-Kamen plays Ghost, Wyatt Russell is John Walker, Julia Louis-Dreyfus plays Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, Florence Pugh appears as Yelena Belova, David Harbour is Alexei Shostakov, and Olga Kurylenko plays Taskmaster. Harrison Ford will be back as General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross from CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD, too. Jake Schreier (ROBOT & FRANK) is directing based on a script by Eric Pearson (THOR: RAGNAROK) that was rewritten by Lee Sung Jin. Read more about THUNDERBOLTS* here. [May 2, 2025]

SupermanSuperman | Cinemark

The first new DC movie to come from the Gunn/Safran regime is a new version of Superman. This new version, however, sounds like a very pure, classic version of the character. Gunn is writing and may direct. David Corenswet plays Superman; Rachel Brosnahan is Lois Lane; and Nathan Fillion plays aggressive hotshot Green Lantern Guy Gardner. Expect more character introductions in the movie, too. "It’s not an origin story," Safran says. "It focuses on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. Superman represents truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned." Read more about SUPERMANhere. [July 11, 2025]

The Fantastic FourThe Fantastic Four | Cinemark

The Fantastic Four launched Marvel Comics as we know it in 1961, and this movie will be the first time Kevin Feige and Marvel Studios have direct control of Marvel's "first family." Pedro Pascal ("The Last of Us") plays Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby (the MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE series, "The Crown") plays Sue Storm, Ebon Moss-Bachrach ("The Bear") plays the Thing, and Joseph Quinn ("Stranger Things," A QUIET PLACE: DAY ONE) is Johnny Storm, aka the Human Torch. It seems like at least some of this movie might be set in the 1960s, but at this point everything other than the core cast is up in the air. Read more about FANTASTIC FOUR here. [July 25, 2025]

BladeBlade | Cinemark

Marvel is rebooting BLADE, with two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali (MOONLIGHT, GREEN BOOK) set to star. We don't have any story details, but Bassam Tariq is directing from a script by Stacy Osei-Kuffour. And since BLADE is all about a half-vampire anti-hero who hunts creatures of the night it's great that the movie arrives just after Halloween in 2025. Read more about BLADE here. [November 7, 2025]

Avengers 5Avengers 5 | Cinemark

Details are very thin about this movie right now — we don't even know who the Avengers will be by the time this one rolls around! (Maybe they'll be a version of the Thunderbolts… but maybe not!) Michael Waldron is writing the current draft, but no director is currently attached. There isn't even a definitive title; THE KANG DYNASTY was set to be the movie's title and overall angle, but that is likely to change in the wake of Jonathan Majors being fired by Marvel following his criminal conviction. Read more about AVENGERS 5 here. [May 1, 2026]

The Batman Part IIThe Batman Part II | Cinemark

Another Elseworlds movie — we're getting a follow-up to THE BATMAN while the core DC univers will also get its own new Batman. It's too early to have any real details, but writer/director Matt Reeves, co-writer Mattson Tomlin, and star Robert Pattinson are all working together again for THE BATMAN - PART II. Since Barry Keoghan briefly appeared as the Joker in the first movie (and had a longer scene that was released as deleted footage) we expect that he'll appear as well. Beyond that, we'll have to wait for more info. [October 2, 2026]

Avengers: Secret WarsAvengers: Secret Wars | Cinemark

Take what we know about AVENGERS 5 and cut it in half. That's still more than we know about SECRET WARS. But the subtitle here gives us clues, too. The first Secret Wars took place in 1985, in a big Marvel Comics crossover event. A sequel followed a few years later, and then in 2015 a "spiritual sequel" greatly compacted Marvel's comic book multiverse. Since this is the final movie (that we know about) in the Multiverse Saga, expect a lot of big changes by the time the credits roll. Michael Waldron is writing. Read more about AVENGERS: SECRET WARS here. [May 7, 2027]

The Authority

James Gunn recently tweeted about DC's deep roster of characters, especially when taking into account imprints like Wildstorm. So it's not a total surprise to see The Authority — which became a DC team when the company bought the publishing imprint Wildstorm — in the new roster. "The Authority’s a very different kind of superhero story," Gunn says. "They are basically good-intentioned, but they think that the world is completely broken and the only way to fix it is to take things into their own hands, whether that means killing people, destroying heads of state, changing governments—basically, whatever they want to do to make the world better. We’ll see how that journey goes for them." [Release Date TBA]

The Brave & The Bold

Andy Muschietti (THE FLASH) will direct. "This is the introduction of the DCU’s Batman," Gunn explains. "It is not Robert Pattinson. It is not Ben Affleck. This is the story of Damian Wayne, who is Batman’s actual son that he didn’t know existed for the first eight to ten years of his life. He was raised as a little murderer and assassin. He’s my favorite Robin. It’s based on the Grant Morrison comic run ("Batman & Son"), which is one of my favorite Batman runs. We’re putting it all together right now." [Release Date TBA]

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse

We don't know much at all about the third SPIDER-VERSE movie beyond the awareness that it picks up following the cliffhanger ending of ACROSS THE SPIDER-VERSE. A serious battle is brewing with The Spot, and we'll see if Miles Morales can really follow through on his intention to exist as Spider-Man without anyone around him paying the ultimate personal price. [Release Date TBA]

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow

Sometimes Supergirl is depicted as, well, a lot like Superman. That won't be the case here. Gunn describes this as "a big, science-fiction epic." It's based on the comic book series "Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow" by Tom King and Bilquis Evely. {King is one of the writers who has contributed to the overall structure of DC's new slate.) "In our story, we have Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by incredibly loving parents. Kara was on Krypton. She was on a piece of Krypton that drifted away from the planet and she lived there for the first fourteen years of her life in a horrible situation where she watched everyone around her die. So, she’s a much harsher and more f*cked up Supergirl than you’ve been used to thus far." [Release Date TBA]

Swamp Thing

One of the most exciting aspects of this new slate is Swamp Thing. Gunn calls this "a very dark horror story" which will tell the origins of Swamp Thing — which hopefully means an adaptation of Alan Moore's celebrated storyline from the 1980s. Gunn has strong roots in horror. And at a small press presentation announcing this slate on January 30, he said "You need to tell stories that don’t just pretend to be different genres, but actually are different genres.” So when he promises a dark horror story, we believe that might actually be what we see! [Release Date TBA]

Even More to Come!

There are more superhero movies on the way of course, as DC, Marvel, and Sony all continue to develop new films. There are sequels to SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME: and SHANG-CHI in development. Marvel also has an X-Men movie in development, and we're likely to hear about even more movies soon.
