The five days of unrest that gripped Los Angeles during the riots that swept the city from April 29 to May 4, 1992 still loom large in L.A. consciousness. The outcome of the Rodney King trial, in which four police officers were acquitted of charges of using excessive force against King, sparked long-simmering racial divides into a bonfire that consumed the city.

The movie 1992 takes place during those five days of riots, as two father/son pairs try to deal with their own conflicts and uncertain futures in very different ways. Here's the trailer for and everything else we know about the dramatic thriller.

What's the 1992 Release Date?

Lionsgate will release 1992 in movie theaters on August 30, 2024.

Watch the 1992 Trailer

This trailer for 1992 sets up the two core character pairs: the father and son played by Tyrese Gibson and Christopher Ammanuel, and those played by Ray Liotta and Scott Eastwood. Of equal importance is how the trailer shows off the recreation of 1992 Los Angeles, which has been crafted to an impressive level of detail.

Who's in the Cast of 1992?

1992 stars Tyrese Gibson as Mercer, a custodian who, with his son (played by Christopher Ammanuel) runs afoul of a heist at work. The perpetrators of the crime are played by Scott Eastwood, Dylan Arnold, and Ray Liotta — and 1992 will represent the final big-screen performance from the late Liotta, who died just following the completion of filming in 2022.

1992 also features Michael Beasley, Ori Pfeffer, and Oleg Taktarov.

Is 1992 a true Story?

While the backdrop of 1992 is certainly based in history — the LA Riots happened, and they were overwhelming for those living in the city — this specific heist story is fiction. Some similar crime of opportunity may have taken place at the time, but that's not where this movie comes from.

1992 opens on August 30.
