The 2020 Oscar Nominations Are Here!

(01/13/2020)

What are the best movies of 2019? We love talking about our favorites because the answer can be different for everyone. The discussion is a great reminder of how many great movies came out in the last twelve months. 2019 was a great year for movies!

Now the conversation moves to a new level with the reveal of the Oscar nominations. We've been keeping a keen eye on award season for several months as it moves through rounds of laurels given out by critics groups all the way through the Golden Globe Awards, where 1917, JOKER, and ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD were big winners. What's next? We're about to find out!

The 2020 Oscar Nominations have been announced, and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences feels much the same way the Golden Globes voters did. JOKER garnered an amazing 11 nominations, including Best Picture — 2020 is the year of the JOKER Oscars! ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD and 1917 each got 10 nominations, including Best Picture. (We predicted JOKER's Oscar showing right here!) PARASITE also had a strong showing. Read on for details on the 2020 Oscar nominees, and for information on our Oscar Movie Week event, which runs from February 3 through February 9!

Nominations for 1917, JOKER, and ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD were expected and well-earned, but seeing LITTLE WOMEN, FORD V FERRARI, and PARASITE (above) on the list is a pleasant surprise. JOJO RABBIT also turned up on the Best Picture list, which wasn't a given. (Read more about JOJO RABBIT here.) The race really seems to come down to the three films that received ten or more nominations each, but you never know how it'll end up — there could be a huge surprise when the envelope is opened on February 9.

Directors and Screenwriters

The core group of Best Picture nominations also mostly make up the 2020 Best Director nominees block, with Sam Mendes (1917), Todd Phillips (JOKER) and Quentin Tarantino (ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD) all scoring nominations, alongside PARASITE director Bong Joon Ho.

On the screenplay side, Taika Waititi was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay for JOJO RABBIT, alongside Todd Phillips & Scott Silver (JOKER) and Greta Gerwig (LITTLE WOMEN). KNIVES OUT only got one Oscar nomination, and it goes to writer/director Rian Johnson, in the Best Original Screenplay category. (Read more about the unique KNIVES OUT screenplay here.) Also nominated are Sam Mendes & Krysty Wilson-Cairns (1917), Quentin Tarantino (ONCE UPON A TIME...IN HOLLYWOOD) and Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won for PARASITE.

The Best Actors

One of the pleasant surprises comes in the Best Actor race, where Antonio Banderas is nominated for PAIN & GLORY. Joaquin Phoenix gets the nomination for JOKER, which sets him up as the front-runner, while Leonardo DiCaprio is nominated for ONCE UPON A TIME… IN HOLLYWOOD. Brad Pitt also gets a Best Supporting Actor nomination for his role in the same film. Pitt will have stiff competition from Tom Hanks, however, who is nominated for playing Mr. Rogers in A BEAUTIFUL DAY IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. We talk about Hanks's performance as Fred Rogers here.

Cynthia Erivo received a Best Actress nomination for HARRIET (see an interview with Erivo here), while Saoirse Ronan was recognized for her incredible work in LITTLE WOMEN, and Charlize Theron is nominated for her transformation into Fox News personality Megyn Kelly in BOMBSHELL, and Renée Zellweger is nominated for bringing Judy Garland back to the big screen in JUDY.

LITTLE WOMEN got another nomination as Florence Pugh is nominated for Best Supporting Actress (read about our love for the movie here), while Margot Robbie is similarly nominated for BOMBSHELL and Kathy Bates is honored for her work in the true story of RICHARD JEWELL. Scarlett Johansson got her first nomination in the Best Supporting Actress category, too, for JOJO RABBIT. You can check out a playlist of trailers for many of the 2020 Oscar nominees right here.
