Michael B. Jordan Meets Tom Clancy

Without Remorse: Everything You Need to Know

Tom Clancy's Without Remorse: Everything You Need to Know

Author Tom Clancy creates such effective characters that a couple of his political thriller heroes have been played by a wide range of actors on screens large and small. Take Jack Ryan, introduced in the 1984 novel "The Hunt for Red October" and eventually played by five actors in film and TV projects.

The character John Clark is working to catch up. Introduced in the novel "The Cardinal of the Kremlin," he's already been played by Willem Dafoe and Liev Schreiber, in the Jack Ryan movies CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER and THE SUM OF ALL FEARS. Now Michael B. Jordan takes on the role as the star of WITHOUT REMORSE, based on the first novel in which John Clark is given center stage. Here's everything we know about WITHOUT REMORSE.

The Without Remorse Release Date

WITHOUT REMORSE is set to open in theatres on February 26, 2021. It was originally set to release in October 2020, but as the release schedule for many movies shifted this summer, Paramount moved WITHOUT REMORSE to the February 2021 weekend.

Is There a Without Remorse Trailer?

There's one brief WITHOUT REMORSE trailer so far. Michael B. Jordan debuted the clip on his Instagram in late 2019, and you can watch it above. It doesn't show too much of the movie, but it suggests the movie's tone will be dark and mysterious, and probably pretty intense too.

The Story in Without Remorse

Tom Clancy's original novel "Without Remorse" doesn't introduce Clark exactly, but it does tell us everything we really need to know about him, starting with the fact that John Clark is not actually his name.

The synopsis for Clancy's original 1993 novel tells us a lot. "His code name is Mr. Clark. His work for the CIA is brilliant, cold-blooded and efficient… But who is he really? In a harrowing tour de force, Tom Clancy shows how an ordinary man named John Kelly crossed the lines of justice and morality to become the CIA legend, Mr. Clark. It is an unforgettable journey into the heart of darkness. Without mercy. Without guilt. Without remorse."

John Clark evolved from a supporting character in novels oriented around Jack Ryan, but at this point a new big-screen crossover with the characters is uncertain. As we noted above, Clark and Ryan have shared the movie screen in two films already. While Chris Pine most recently played Ryan on the big screen, the primary incarnation of Jack Ryan is now in a television series, Amazon's "Jack Ryan," starring John Krasinski. So we're not sure if the two men will reunite in this movie or a future one.

Michael B. Jordan Leads the Cast of Without Remorse

Michael B. Jordan in Without Remorse

The novel WITHOUT REMORSE tells John Clark's origin story, and we understand the movie will trace much of the same story with Michael B Jordan bringing the character to life. Jordan is joined by an excellent cast, including Jamie Bell (ROCKETMAN, SNOWPIERCER) and Jodie Turner-Smith (QUEEN & SLIM).

The cast also features Luke Mitchell, Jack Kesy, Brett Gelman, Colman Domingo, Jacob Scipio, Cam Gigandet, and Todd Lasance.

The Filmmakers Behind Without Remorse

WITHOUT REMORSE screenwriter Taylor Sheridan was originally an actor, with significant roles in "Veronica Mars" and "Sons of Anarchy." His first produced screenplay was the impressive SICARIO, and he also wrote that movie's sequel, DAY OF THE SOLDADO. In addition, he wrote the impressive Western heist movie HELL OR HIGH WATER and wrote and directed the murder-mystery WIND RIVER. He also co-created the series "Yellowstone."

Sheridan and WITHOUT REMORSE director Stefano Sollima collaborated on the SICARIO sequel, which Sollima directed. He has worked extensively on multiple crime series for Italian television, with the most recent being the TV series version of "Gomorrah." This Tom Clancy adaptation should be excellent material for them to dig into.
