Artemis Fowl: Everything You Need to Know

(03/24/2020)

We've seen a lot of movies about criminal masterminds, but none quite like ARTEMIS FOWL. Disney's adaptation of the first book in a long-running YA series by Eoin Colfer stars Ferdia Shaw as the 12-year old master criminal Artemis Fowl, whose search for his missing father (played by Colin Farrell) leads him to an encounter with a long-hidden and definitely mythical society.

The movie version of ARTEMIS FOWL has been in the making for a long time, and now it is almost here! Check out the new trailer for the movie, and read about everythign you need to know before ARTEMIS FOWL opens.

Watch the New Artemis Fowl Trailer

Imagine a cross between the HARRY POTTER and MEN IN BLACK movies, and you'll be on the right track for what we see in this new ARTEMIS FOWL trailer. The clip introduces young Artemis and his father — who is considered a criminal, but whose work is actually more complicated — and begins to show the hidden world into which young Artemis is drawn.

This trailer is full of creatures, action, and promises of a unique and entertaining adventure. Artemis discovers an ancient, underground civilization — an unusually advanced world populated by fairies and other supposedly mythical creatures — and forms a plan to rescue his father.

The Original Artemis Fowl Books

The Original Artemis Fowl Books

Irish author Eoin Colfer has written eight young adult novels featuring the criminal mastermind Artemis Fowl II. The first book was published in 2001, and the most recent, "Artemis Fowl and the Last Guardian," came out in 2012. There are graphic novel adaptations of some of the books, and a planned spin-off series which began with "The Fowl Twins," centered on the characters of Myles and Beckett Fowl.

This first movie is an adaptation of the original 2001 novel. We say "first movie" because no studio adapts a book that is the first in a series of eight without thinking of the potential sequels to follow.

Who Directed Artemis Fowl?

The ARTEMIS FOWL director is somewhat surprising: Kenneth Branagh, who for many years was best known for adaptations of Shakespeare, is the filmmaker behind the new movie. Granted, his last few movies have covered a lot of different ground. He made THOR for Marvel Studios (back when Marvel was partnered with Paramount, prior to Disney's acquisition of the comic book studios) and the live-action CINDERELLA for Disney. He also directed JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT, in which Chris Pine stepped into the role of Tom Clancy's CIA analyst hero Jack Ryan, and MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS, based on the Agatha Christie novel of the same name.

The video above shows Branagh at work, and reveals some of the process of bringing this adventure to life.

The Artemis Fowl Cast

The Artemis Fowl Cast

ARTEMIS FOWL features the first major performance from young Irish actor Ferdia Shaw, who is new to audiences, but who comes from a show-biz family. Shaw's grandfather was Robert Shaw, best known as the shark-hunting Quint in JAWS. He's joined by another relative newcomer, Lara McDonnell, who plays Holly Short, an 80-year old elven reconnaissance officer.

Josh Gad also appears as Mulch Diggums, a dwarf who was once in the employ of the elder Artemis, played by Colin Farrell. Nonso Anozie plays Butler, who acts as confidant and bodyguard to the Fowl family, while Tamara Smart plays as Juliet Butler, the security specialist's sister and protégé. And Judi Dench plays Commander Root, Holly's commanding elvish officer.
